Congress Working Committee Meet: Sonia Gandhi To Continue As Party Chief
New President of the party to be elected within the next six months.
After a marathon seven-hour meeting of Congress Working Committee, it was decided that Sonia Gandhi will continue as the interim Party President for now. However, the meeting also decided that a new Chief must be elected in the next six months. This crucial meet was convened after more than 20 prominent leaders had written a letter to Gandhi demanding an “active, full-time and visible” President. At the start of today’s gathering, she had offered to resign from her post.
It was former Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh who spoke in favour of Sonia Gandhi and urged her to continue as Party President. He was also backed by former Defence Minister AK Antony. There was plenty of drama in the morning when Kapil Sibal, one of the signatories of the letter, said on Twitter that Rahul Gandhi had accused them of “collusion with the BJP.” Sibal went on to delete the tweet, mentioning that Rahul had informed him “personally that he never said what was attributed to him.”
