In October last year, Chirag Paswan took over the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) as the national president after his father and LJP founder Ram Vilas Paswan passed away. Now, after an emergency meeting of the party’s national working committee, Paswan has been removed from the presidency post of LJP. Also, the committee led by Suraj Bhan Singh will organise a meeting of the party’s national council to elect the new national president within five days.

Reportedly, the meeting to elect the new president might be held in Patna. Many party officials believe that Paswan’s uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras is likely to be the next national president of LJP.  After the news of Chirag Paswan being removed from the party’s presidency broke, many of his supporters rebelled against the decision. Within no time, they made it onto the streets of Patna. Also, Paswan’s supporters were seen smearing black ink on the posters of five rebel LJP MLAs outside the party office.

For those unversed, the decision to remove Paswan came after five of the six LJP Lok Sabha MPs revolted and chose Paras as their leader. On Saturday, speaker Om Birla cleared their proposal, leading to this change. Reportedly, on Monday, Paswan tried to reconcile with the party but nothing worked out. He also proposed the officials to give the presidency post to his mother, if not him. However, his plea was rejected.

The reports claim that there was a tiff between Paras and Paswan when the latter decided to back away from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Bihar election last year. Talking about Paswan’s removal, his uncle Paras said to the press that it was the decision of 5 MPs to “save the party”. “I’ve not broken the party, I’ve saved it. Chirag Paswan is my nephew as well as the party’s national president. I have no objection against him,” he was quoted saying.

Now, the latest update states that Paswan has opted for a legal fight against the “rebel” group. Well, it remains to be seen how the situation moulds ahead.
