With less than two months to go for the West Bengal legislative assembly elections, the political war between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has intensified to an extent of taking a personal tone. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) issued summons to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujira Banerjee on Sunday to appear for investigations in a case of coal pilferage and illegal mining in the state.

Abhishek Banerjee is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and a minister from the Diamond Harbour constituency. The TMC is looking at this as a deliberate attempt by the Modi administration to attack the WB government ahead of the polls. It was only last week, during a media conclave when the CM had challenged Home Minister Amit Shah to first defeat her nephew before harbouring aspirations to overthrow her.

In November last year, the Kolkata Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the central agency found lapses and substantial proof of illegal mining of coal from the leasehold area of Eastern Coalfields Ltd, a public sector owned company.

Senior leaders like JP Nadda and Amit Shah have played a pivotal role over the last twelve months to strengthen the strategy and roadmap to conquer the eastern state. With prominent politicians including Kailash Vijayvargiya and Dilip Ghosh at the forefront, the party strives to win at least 200 of the 294 seats in the Vidhan Sabha. However, Mamata Banerjee has also left no stone unturned while lashing out at her rival party. Whether it is the insider versus outsider debate or the CAA-NRC issue, she is doing what it takes to secure her vote bank for another term.
