Black Widows: Real Life Incidents Where Wives Murdered Their Husbands

When we hear of murder it’s the image of a man that immediately comes to our mind but did you know 11% of women are responsible for the murders? Read on to know more

Black Widows is an upcoming thriller drama on ZEE5 which is produced by Namit Sharma and Big Synergy Media Ltd. The storyline of Black Widows is about three women who kill their husbands but unaware of the fact that one of them survives and plans to take revenge. The women get happy thinking that they will get away with the perfect crime but a retiring cop who is on the mission to solve the murder mystery plans to reveal the criminals.

This thrilling drama series is based on the Finnish drama by the same name, the ‘Black Widows’. The Indian version will be the eighth international remake and is created by Roope Lehtinen and Mikko Polla (now of Fire Monkey, then Moskito) for Finnish broadcaster Nelonen. The actors who will be seen essaying pivotal roles are Mona Singh, Sharad Kelkar, Shamita Shetty, Swastika Mukherjee, Aamir Ali, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Raima Sen, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and others.

When we say criminals or murders, it is an image of a man that immediately appears in front of us, or cases of husbands killing their wives over food or domestic violence is what we imagine but do you know 11% of women are responsible for the murders?  Upcoming series Black Widows is about such women, the series named after the desert spiders whose deadly female often eats their partner after sex. There are several examples of black widows who have killed their abusive husbands for different reasons. Here is a list of real incidents of wives who killed their husbands.

Brynn Hartman

Brynn Hartman was an actress who was not famous like her husband Phil who was known for playing Bill Clinton and other characters on Saturday Night Live. The couple were married for 10 years and had two children. But on 28 May 1998, Brynn fatally shot her husband thrice while he was sleeping. Later, she killed herself also and it was reported that the couple was facing rough times in their marriage.

Evelyn Dick

Evelyn Dick was also known as the Torso killer whose crime came to light when some kids saw a limbless and headless torso in the woods. The torso was of John Dick, husband of Evelyn who married her six months ago. During interrogation, cops found an infant boy’s body covered with cement kept in the suitcase. Later, they came to know that it was Dick’s son who she killed. She was sentenced to life in imprisonment but was later released in 1958 after she served 11 years in prison.

Mary Elizabeth Wilson

Mary Elizabeth Wilson also known as the merry widow of windy nook killed two of her husbands. Cops soon got to know about her actions and found bodies exhumed with insecticides. She was given sentenced to death in 1958 for murdering two of the husbands, but later her punishment was reduced to life imprisonment. She died four years later in 1963.

Betty Lou Beets

Betty Lou Beets’s son confessed to the cops that he helped his mother bury the body of her fifth husband. During the investigation, cops found out body of Betty’s fourth husband that was buried under the plastic wishing well. She had shot both her husbands multiple times in the back of their heads. The jury found her guilty and sentenced her to death.

Katherine Knight

Katherine Knight, the Australian butcher married her first husband, David Kellett, she allegedly tried to strangle him. During her pregnancy, she hit her husband with a frying pan. Later, Katherine married David Saunders and later stabbed him multiple times in the stomach with a pair of scissors during an argument. She later even stabbed her live-in boyfriend, John Price 37 times as he was trying to escape. She even skinned him and hanged his skin from a meat hook. Knight chopped him and started cooking his body parts. Cops found Price’s head in the pot along with other vegetables which were on the stove. She was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

Betty Neumar

Betty Neumar killed her first husband by shooting him in his head and her second husband’s death was a bit of mystery. Later, her third husband shot himself while her fourth husband was gunned down in their home. Betty’s fifth husband died and cops were determined to investigate whether he was poisoned. Harold Gentry’s (Betty’s fourth husband) brother told cops to re-open the case and charged Betty for hiring gunmen for killing her husband. Neumar died of complications due to cancer before cops could investigate her.
