Many loved her right from the beginning but there were several who questioned her talent and decision. But she marched on relentlessly. Keerthy Suresh silenced her detractors and won critics and audiences alike with her stellar performance in last year’s Mahanati. Moreover, she won a National Award for her realistic portrayal as yesteryear actress Savitri in the biopic. The pretty actress set new standards for herself. Having questioned her own abilities to deliver, this film was the milestone that broke all moulds that were created previously.

Today, on October 17, Keerthy celebrates her birthday. She turns 27 today but has been in and around the cinemas for 19 years. Yes, that is right. Born to Malayalam director-producer and Tamil actress, Suresh Kumar and Menaka, films were not just a source of entertainment to Keerthy. It was a way of life. At the young age of seven, she featured in her father’s film, Pilots. Much later, the actress was reminded that her dedication to acting has always been tremendous and genuine.

Like all South-Indian families, Keerthy wasn’t allowed to rebel out of education to be who she was always meant to be. While her parents encouraged her to go to the US and pursue high education, like her sister, Keerthy rebelled her way out in the most innocent fashion. The actress herself had set the bar at under-grad education. But when the time came, she deliberately failed at the exams. Because she wanted to “make sure that the industry didn’t forget I was around”.

Most youngsters are ready to put their everything to be an actor one day. Keerthy was the same. But coming from a filmy background, she had already made her mind – to be in the cinemas, not necessarily on the screen. So, she went on to complete her degree in Costume Design. It’s a full-circle moment! Her only film that won her applause and accolades, went on to win the National Award for Best Costume Design. It took her five years and some strong decision, at the stake of self-doubt, to emerge as a force to reckon with.

She started off with Malayam cinema because that was closer to home. Very organically, Keerthy swung her way to Tamil cinema with Idhu Enna Maayam (2015). Once again, the reception wasn’t too welcoming. Naturally, she moved to Telugu cinema with Nenu Shailaja (2016) opposite Ram Pothineni. Here, she was at least greeted with a warm welcome. This is where the South Indian states started to take notice of the emerging force that Keerthy was.

Now, that half the country is in love with her, Keerthy is preparing to set her foot in the film-capital, Bollywood. Soon, we will be seeing her in a Hindi film, opposite Ajay Devgn. All that we have to say is, you go, girl! The world is your oyster and the day isn’t far when you will make the nation proud overseas.
