As Cases Rise, India And Russia In Talks About COVID-19 Vaccine
Dubbed Sputnik V, Russia’s vaccine has courted controversy ever since it was announced.
Even as India’s COVID-19 numbers continue to rise to frightening levels, the country is now in talks with Russia regarding its recently announced vaccine, Sputnik V. Russian ambassador to India, Nikolay Kudashev, has said that Moscow is talking to the Indian government “on different levels” about cooperation that could include “supplies, co-development” of the vaccine. “As far as we know, after some necessary technical steps, the vaccine would be ready to be widely used, including abroad,” he said.
Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is due for a visit to Moscow this week and the topic of the vaccine is very likely to be on his agenda. Sputnik V was announced last month by Russia as an effective vaccine against the coronavirus, but it received widespread criticism from scientists across the world, as Russia hadn’t shared test results of Phases 1 and 2 with the public. Moreover, at the time of the announcement, Phase 3 of its testing wasn’t even completed.
