The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to get underway in the UAE this year, as confirmed by the tournament’s governing council chairman Brijesh Patel today. Now, even as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) awaits a nod from the government of India, one cannot help but wonder if the International Cricket Council (ICC) caved to the popularity of the league and cancelled its T20 World Cup that was supposed to take place in Australia this year.

The cricket body announced a new schedule for its upcoming world leagues yesterday. This year’s T20 World Cup will now be played in 2021, whereas the same tournament will again take place in 2022 since it is supposed to be played every two years. And, of course, 2023 will be the year of the 50-over Cricket World Cup that is supposed to be held in either India or Australia. The Covid-19 crisis has dealt a big blow to cricket, but the sport has slowly been sliding back on track in the past few weeks.
