Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA are developing a device that could look into a person’s thoughts while they are asleep. Basically, when a person is awake, their conscious mind is active and when they’re in a dream state in sleep, their subconscious mind does the work. So this device could be functioning on interfacing with the subconscious.
Dormio, as the device is named by those researchers, aims to ‘hack’ people’s dreams. They claim that the device is meant to regulate dreams. The researchers say that often people’s dreams affect the rest of their day. A bad dream or a nightmare could spoil the day by being on their minds and a good dream could make them feel better the whole day. Hence, the device will try to block bad dreams and focus on only letting the mind see good dreams.
One of the researchers of the project, Adam Horowitz, says that we spend a significant amount of time in our life, seeing dreams. And it affects us a lot. So if we could control what we dream, we could expand the potential of the human mind.
Controlling one’s dreams and subconscious is called Lucid Dreaming, and MIT aims to achieve Lucid dreaming with the help of Dormio’s technology. The device is designed as a glove that has to be worn on hand before sleeping. It has been tested on 50 people till now and is still under development.
