7 Years After Nirbhaya Rape Case, Has Nothing Changed?
Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi was speaking to a news channel when she said that it somehow feels like we are still living a decade in the past.
As voices around India demand justice for the 19-year-old Dalit woman who was gang-raped and killed brutally by four men in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, the mother of Nirbhaya has come forth and made an appeal for justice. Asha Devi was speaking to a news channel when she said, “It somehow feels like we are still living a decade in the past.” She added that since the alleged perpetrators have been caught, she requests the Uttar Pradesh government to grant justice to the woman by hanging the four. Meanwhile, the family of the Hathras victim is devastated and feels unsafe in their own village.
The Hathras victim family has alleged that the victim’s body was cremated forcefully by the police, not allowing them to pay their last respects to her. They have said that the family was locked up inside their house by the police, who then cremated the body on their own. UP’s Panchayati Raj Minister Bhupendra Chaudhary, however, has denied these allegations, having said, “The victim’s family have themselves performed the cremation according to customs.”
