1. Ask First, And Then Act

1/5

In the hit ZEE5 Original series Kaali, Kaali (played by Paoli Dam), is an amazing mother to Sonny, her son. In fact, everything she does is for him, and when he meets with a life-threatening accident and requires a surgery that costs an exorbitant amount of money, she goes to extreme lengths to scrounge it up in a display of immense courage. Sonny also has a physical disability as he is paralysed from the waist down and moves with the help of a wheelchair. If you have a loved one with the same, here are some ways that you too can take care of them in a considerate and helpful way.

Don’t assume that your loved one needs the kind of help you feel like giving them at the moment. Always ask for their own requirements, and then go about acting on your offer. Never forget that that a disability may put one at a disadvantage, but their agency is their own.

2. Communicate Clearly

2/5

Always speak clearly and make sure to enunciate if your loved one has a cognitive issue, for example as in verbal autism. Pay close attention to the pace of both of your words, and use simple sentences, the crisper the better. Listen closely, and allow them to finish talking before making a judgement. Don’t interrupt while they are speaking.

3. Address Directly

3/5

Address your loved one directly when talking to them. Never look at their attendant or the caregiver who is with them, as this can be quite offensive. Make eye contact during conversation, and make the effort to listen and understand what they have on their mind too, just as you would any other person!

4. Be Flexible With Their Family Members

4/5

If you know that your friend, or even a colleague or employee who has a family member or a loved one with a physical disability, always grant them some flexibility in terms of mandates or timings whenever possible, because they have to go the extra mile to care for their loved ones. Put yourself in their shoes, and be considerate of their needs to make their lives just a little bit easier.

5. Confirm Accessibility Before Meetings

5/5

When making a plan to meet your loved one, ensure that the place you have selected is easily accessible to them. Ramps or other support services need to be available to accommodate their needs for it to be a suitable location for your time together. Always keep this in mind in order to be considerate enough each and every time that you prepare to meet them.
