Halal starring Chinmay Mandlekar, Priyadarshan Jadhav and Neha Dakhinkar, is based on the practice of Nikah Halala, which involves a female divorcee getting married and then getting a divorce from her current husband to marry her previous one. While the practice is widely followed among Sunni Muslims, Halal boldly critiques it. Directed by national-award winning director Shivaji Loton Patil, the film tells the story of a woman who is divorced by her husband through triple talaq. She gets remarried but soon her previous husband wants her back.

Here are five reasons why you should watch the film.

1. The story

The topic of Nikah Halala hasn’t been explored considering how sensitive it is. But Halal sheds light on the same and provides a gripping narrative to critique the practice.

2. The performances

Chinmay, Priyadarshan and Neha do justice to their characters and are convincing with their performances. The actress especially is a pleasure to watch as she transforms from being a coy girl to one that stands up for herself and fights for her rights.

3. The daring narrative

We can’t stress this enough- Halal is a bold and much needed film. It explores the difficulty that Sunni Mulsim women go through in the practice of Nikah Halal and criticises it in a smart way. The film wins extra points just for covering the topic alone.

4. The direction

A story packs a punch only when its presented in an appealing manner. Filmmaker Shivaji does a splendid job in putting the pieces of the plot together, through effortless direction.

5. A multi-award winning film

A film winning several awards is a direct sign that it’s a must watch! Halal has bagged several awards in categories such as ‘Best film is social issue category’ at the Maharashtra State Awards, Best Social Film at the 4th Indian Cine Film Festival 2016, etc. Halal has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
