1. A Stellar Cast - Maanvi Gagroo, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Shashank Arora, Kumud Mishra and Sid Makkar

Decriminalizing a part of Section 377 of the IPC, the Supreme Court of India, in a landmark verdict provided relief to the LGBTQA community last year. Ruling against the 158-year-old law made when India was under the British colonial reign, a five-judge Constitution bench passed the judgment. The road to this newly attained freedom was certainly not easy. New ZEE5 Original film 377 अब Normal traces the events that led up to this historic long-pending victory.

Inspired by true events, 377 अब Normal is an emotional drama that narrates the journey of five petitioners who challenged Section 377. Witness the struggles of the LGBT community and the landmark judgment that marked the beginning of a new era of equality.

The film stars Maanvi Gagroo, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Shashank Arora, Kumud Mishra and Sid Makkar in pivotal roles.

2. Sensitive, Real Accounts

The narrative jumps through different timelines, stopping at a common point – the fear of embracing one’s sexuality. Not giving away the plot, some of them are tortured in police cells while others abandoned by family, 377 अब Normal traces these innately human and painful accounts of different individuals.

3. Section 377 - A Decade Long Debate

For those not in the know, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code has commenced a century and a half ago in 1861 when Britishers ruled India. It was designed basis Britain’s ‘Buggery Act’ of 1533 that criminalised “unnatural offences”. According to the act, “whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.”

A longstanding battle surpassing decades and a century finally saw the dawn of a new era last year. However, Section 377 hasn’t been completely abolished for it also covers unnatural sexual offenses. Thus, acts like bestiality are still punishable under the law.

4. Director Faruk Kabir

Director Faruk Kabir who has assisted on popular Bollywood films like Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Asoka amongst others helms 377 अब Normal. His directorial and acting debut vehicle Allah Ke Banday starred Naseeruddin Shah, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni to name a few. Dealing with juvenile crime, the film very well appreciated by the audience and also was screened at the Chicago Film Festival. It received several nominations including one for Faruk as Best Debut Director.

Given his body of work, it would be safe to assume that the film has been very well made.

5. The Five-Judge Constitution Bench

“History owes an apology to the members of this community and their families, for the delay in providing redressal for the ignominy and ostracism that they have suffered through the centuries. The members of this community were compelled to live a life full of fear of reprisal and persecution. This was on account of the ignorance of the majority to recognize that homosexuality is a completely natural condition, part of a range of human sexuality,” opined a female Judge from the panel.
