15 Lakh Electricity Department Employees Protested Against Selling Of UP Power Discom To Private Firms
Protestors were of the opinion that privatization in the power sector would increase the price of electricity, making the lives of common people more difficult.
Over 15 lakh electricity department employees including junior engineers, sub-divisional officers, executive engineers, and superintending engineers took down the streets to protest against selling UP Power Discom to private firms. A huge number of power employees carried out an indefinite strike from Monday, October 5 in response to a call given by UP Vidyut Karmachari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti to protest against the proposed privatization of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL). The protests resulted in long power cuts and supply disruption thus disrupting consumers’ daily activities.
The police, however, managed to control the situation. Protestors were of the opinion that privatization in the power sector is against the masses because electricity would become costlier making the lives of common people more difficult. It would only benefit business houses. Similar such protests also took place in 22 other east UP districts.
