A procession spiralled out of control as the devotees and the local police clashed during Vijayadashami celebrations in Munger
A Durga immersion ceremony turned violent in Bihar’s Munger region as an argument between the devotees and local police spiralled out of control on Monday late night. An 18-year-old man was killed and 27 people were injured in the clash between the crowd and the police. Of the wounded, at least 20 were police personnel.
Trouble started when the police allegedly mishandled a few people around midnight in their bid to finish off all the idol immersions by 5 am, due to the upcoming elections. According to reports, four people were beaten up by the authorities for carrying the idols on their shoulders.
Matters steadily worsened as the mob started pelting stones at the personnel present. Sources say that fire was opened by both, the police and the locals which led to the death of a man. Though the police initially used lathis to manage the crowd followed by tear gas, they had to open fire eventually as crowd was untamable.
This incident comes just 2 days before the first phase of the Bihar Assembly Elections, that starts from 28 October.
