Oxford’s Covid-19 vaccine is prompting an immune response in both the young and the adults. AstraZeneca has recently said that the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker is collaborating with the Oxford University for the manufacturing of ChAdOx1 vaccine for Coronavirus. On October 22, clinical trials for the University of Oxford’s Covid-19 vaccine Covishield resumed after a voluntary pause. The clinical trials for the vaccine candidates are now underway in the US, UK, Brazil, South Africa and Japan.

In India, The Serum Institute is all poised to manufacture 100 million doses of the Oxford Covid19 vaccine, once it passes all the tests and is given a green signal. The CEO of Serum Institute of India Adar Poonawalla said that the vaccine trials will be completed in January, adding that the dose has been given to most of the people who took part in the trial.

Adar Poonawalla also shared the details of the final stage of trial of the Oxford vaccine and said, “We have already given the first dose to most of the patients in the trial, which is more than a 1,000 already. The total trial is for 1,600 patients in India. Then we will give the second dose and analyse them for safety and efficacy.” He added, “That’s why I say January to be absolutely safe for India. Then again, we have to wait till all the data comes in from the UK to collate that together and then the Indian drug controller will have enough data to decide which way to go and when to license the product.”

Adar Poonawalla also said that Oxford’s vaccine is producing a good immune response in addition to antibodies. He said that the data is very good and if the UK emergency licensure it will be up to the government of India to decide and take a call after analysing the data to determine whether they follow suit. The industrialist added that the health ministry is yet to decide the distribution plan and they will respect their decision.
