India Calls For Dialogue Over Crimea At United Nations Security Council; Upholds Importance Of Stability And Peace

India, at the March 17 meeting at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has advocated for peaceful dialogue over the situation in Crimea. The meeting was held as a follow-up to the March 12 meeting under the Arria-formula. Speaking at the UNSC, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative-Political Coordinator to the UN, R Ravindra said that India is looking at political as well as diplomatic solutions that safeguard the interests of all the nations in the region. It was announced that India wants to ensure peace and stability in the areas affected.

Earlier in 2014, Russia had sent its troops into Crimea. They annexed the European peninsula while lending support for the separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine who were in a six-year war. Thousands had been reported killed during the period, which ended in July 2020, when a cease-fire came into effect. During the period, Russia had the attention of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres asking the organization to remain unbiased about Crimea.

A day after the meeting, on March 18, the Group of Seven nations (G7) along with the European Union (EU) came forward in support of India’s notion for peace in the region. According to Ravindra, the path forward for Crimea can only be a peaceful dialogue for a solution that is acceptable by all parties involved.

The meeting held on Wednesday was held as a follow-up to the March 12 meeting on Crimea organized by the UNSC. The members of the meeting included Estonia, France, Ireland, Norway, the UK, and the US. This was the second meeting held to discuss Crimea in five days.
