Dia Mirza Handrich

Dia Mirza was born half German and half Bengali Hindu. Her stepfather raised her, and she adopted his surname Mirza and practised Islam. Although recently, she has added the surname Handrich to her name.

Her Love for the Forest

From childhood, she has been highly fond of forests and loves travelling. Dia has felt a deep connection to nature and has visited almost every jungle in the Indian subcontinent. This early love for nature later manifested in her conservationist views.

The Go-Getter

During her graduation, she worked as a multimedia executive with Neeraj's Multimedia Studio. While working there, she got many modelling projects and advertisements for companies like Emami.

From there, she made her way into beauty pageants. She was second runner up in Miss India, 2000, and she went on to become Miss Asia Pacific Title, 2000. From those feats, she landed into Bollywood with RHTDM and wowed everyone with her performance.

Supporting Budding Talents

In 2011, she started her production house with her ex-husband Sahil Sangha called Born Free entertainment Production house. Dia has produced movies like Love Breakups Zindagi, Bobby Jasoos, and the sitcom Mind the Malhotras. Dia is empowering new writers and directors to experiment. To tell the stories in a new and exciting way while being rooted in Indian culture.

The Wedding Ceremony

Dia Mirza raised quite a few eyebrows and praise when she decided to marry her husband with a female pandit. She got to know about her through a childhood friend and loved the progressive idea behind it. The wedding also didn't have kanyadaan and bidaai ceremonies. Despite the whole event being extremely modern, they were still highly respectful of the Vedic scriptures. During the process, shlokas were painstakingly translated by her dear friend and spent hours over it.

With this unconventional marriage, she firmly stated that it was time to modernize the old tradition and bring the female voice.

Her marriage was also environmentally responsible. She made sure that the event's organization was sustainable without using any plastics or generation of any wastes. All the waste generated was biodegradable and was disposed of safely.

The Social Worker

Dia's mother used to do social work to help alcoholics and addicts. She followed the lead and has made innumerable contributions to the welfare of society. She has been supporting PETA & CRY for more than 15 years now.

  • She has been working with Andhra Pradesh Government for many years to support and raise awareness on several issues such as female foeticide and HIV AIDS.
  • She is an active member of the Cancer Patients Aid Association. Every year, she adopts two to four patients to lend them monetary and emotional support.
  • She believes in maintaining ecological balance and, thus, has adopted two leopards at a zoological park in Lucknow. She was appointed as the ambassador of Wildlife Trust India in 2017.
  • For a collaboration project of Runtastic, The UN Environmental Program, and Internet of Elephants, she gave her voice to a snow leopard, Layla.
  • She is among the very few actors who supported the Narmada Bachao Andolan and crossed the BJP. She raised the rhetorical question to the people of Gujarat, asking them if they wanted to get drinking water by causing misery to thousands. She requested people to also think about thousands of people who will be homeless due to this project.
  • She has worked vigorously towards Rural India Development and got listed on the board of Coca Cola foundation.

Dia Mirza is not just an actress but a true contributor to society and, thus, a role model for many. Her work for the environment has gained her much recognition and reverence in the Indian Film Industry. She also contributes through her writings on various social topics published in magazines and newspapers such as Hindustan Times.
