Amidst the surge in Covid-19 cases, the Maharashtra government on Sunday announced new restrictions and guidelines. This includes a night curfew in the state and strict lockdown during the weekends from Friday 8 pm to Monday 7 am. There will be a ban on a gathering of five or more people throughout the day. Also, shopping malls, restaurants, bars, and temples will be closed down. However, essential services and home delivery are allowed as per the new rules.
Construction activities and prominent industrial operations will carry on with the regular schedule. Rules for controlling the crowd in vegetable markets and other essential places will be imposed soon. Film shootings have got a green signal with the limited number of people on the sets. And on weekends, everything except essential services will be shuttered down. No new restrictions have been issued on traffic, however, public transport will work on its 50 per cent capacity.
The decision of weekend lockdown came after Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray discussed the situation in a cabinet meeting. Earlier, in an interaction with the citizens, the Maharashtra CM had talked about the possibility of a second lockdown in the state due to the unexpected spike of covid cases. Yesterday, Maharashtra reported 57,000 fresh cases.
The ‘weekend lockdown’ decision of the Thackeray government was supported by the former Maharashtra CM and BJP’s prominent leader Devendra Fadnavis. Meanwhile, another major headline of the day includes Shiv Sena taking a toll on BJP amidst the ongoing elections in West Bengal and Assam. Through its mouthpiece Saamna, Shiv Sena stated that the EVM is being ‘hijacked’ by their former ally BJP.
