The much-anticipated Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting is scheduled today (Friday) at 10.30 am through a video conference. To be attended by all the top ministers and chaired by Congress high command Sonia Gandhi, discussions will be focused on the strategy to elect  a new party president soon. Apart from this, the panel will also deliberate on the ongoing farmer protests against the centre’s agricultural bills and the COVID pandemic situation.

Sonia Gandhi, who till now has occupied the position of an interim president, had asked for her to be relieved of her post five months back. She took over as a provisional chief after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resigned following the 2019 Lok Sabha elections debacle.

There has been a massive in-party friction due to the consistently degrading performance of the age-old party in the last few years, with the rival and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as a clear winner across the nation. Last year in August, a letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi that came to be known as the G23 was signed by 23  senior party veterans including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal and other members like Manish Tewari and Bhupinder Hooda. The signatories expressed their anguish on the lack of a permanent leadership for the Congress and the missing strategy, while also pointing out that only someone who is ready to work at the ground level along with the common people should be made the party president.
