BJP Attacks Mamata Banerjee For Appeasing Muslims As Vote Bank
Much to the ire of the BJP, Mamata Banerjee continues to work towards increasing her vote bank from the Muslims of West Bengal, who constitute a massive 27% of the state’s population and have influence over at least 64 seats out of the 294 Vidhan Sabha seats
One of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) most consistent and scathing attacks on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been of favouring the Muslim population at the cost of insulting the Hindu religion.
Recently, a minister of BJP from Uttar Pradesh accused Banerjee of aiding illegal Islamic immigrants and Bangladeshi Muslims into India intentionally. Questions have emerged on why the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is so focussed on appeasing the minority community, that too at the cost of irking the Hindus. The answer to this is that the CM is fully aware of the demography of the Islamic population in Bengal, that also happens to be the largest in the country after Jammu and Kashmir and Assam.
27% Muslims who reside across WB have become a sure shot vote bank for the politician. In the approximate 294 seats in the state’s legislative assembly, at least 64 seats are under the direct influence of Muslim leaders. Be it Malda, Nadia, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas and even South 24 Parganas, all these cities have a considerable Islamic occupancy.
The central government has further criticised the Mamata administration for breaking down temples and curbing essential Hindu festivals. In 2017, she had ordered the Durga Puja committees of the state to end all immersion activities by 6 pm so that the Muslims’ Muharram processions could be conducted stress free.
Meanwhile, as Nandigram has now become a BJP-TMC battleground after the TMC chief announced her decision to contest the upcoming elections from there, a few locals spoke about the development they have seen in the constituency till now. While one person said that the region has become a political warzone, another expressed dissent towards the TMC, stating that no development has been seen in the last many years, whether it is building proper roads or generating employment for the youth.
