The Christmas celebrations are incomplete without gifts from Santa Claus. The kids in Venezuela were in for a big surprise when they got a visit by Santa who gave away gifts to the children. The Santa Claus took to the streets of Venezuelan capital Caracas’ outskirts and distributed gifts among the children. The gifts ranged from clothes to bread. This gifting comes at a time when the country is struggling with the deadly pandemic and an economic collapse. The non-profit group in Venezuela called Santa In The Streets distributed the gifts and food to the children in poor areas of Caracas. The organisation is accepting donations of clothing and toys for 14 years now which they later distribute in poor areas of Venezuela on Christmas. They handed out the gifts in the suburbs of Guarenas this Saturday. A young man named Raymar was dressed as Santa Claus and greeted the long lines of children who were waiting with their parents to receive the gifts which had items like bread, bologna, clothes, shoes, toys among others.

Local coordinator for Santa in the Streets, Amilcar Ruiz said that the group went with more food items as gifts this year as the community is in dire need of it because of the pandemic. Previously, the group was more focused on bringing toys to the children. He said that the people were happy with Santa in the Streets paying a visit to them. He mentioned, “(The community) said ‘Don’t leave us out,'” said Ruiz. “Families have (less capacity) to feed their children.”

The Venezuelan people are once again forced to celebrate their Christmas in times of crisis. The OPEC nation is completing the sixth year of recession and a third of hyperinflation. The major economic crisis has left the nation reeling and has destroyed the spending power of the people, It has also become the major cause of mass migration in the country.

The minimum monthly income of Venezuela is equivalent to a dollar which is barely enough to buy a kilo of rice. President Nicolas Maduro had authorized the widespread use of dollars last year making it the first instance for the first time in 15 years. It boosted commerce but also increased the gap between those who had access to greenbacks and those who earned the local bolivar currency. One of the organizers of this Santa in the Streets said, “There is a pandemic, but people need a hug, a piece of bread,”.
