Covid-19 Update: New Coronavirus Variant Found In France’s Brittany

A new variant of the coronavirus has been reported in the Brittany region of France among cases that weren’t detected by the RT-PCR tests.

Ever since the first strain of Covid-19 was found, the virus has been spreading across the world creating chaos everywhere. In the last few months, many new strains of the virus have been found in various parts of the world. Recently, another mutant strain of the coronavirus has been found in France’s Brittany. According to a statement by the French health ministry, this variant has been found in a cluster of cases out of which several cases had not been detected by the RT-PCR tests.

According to the statement issued by the French health ministry, it is evident that the initial analysis did not show this new variant to be more dangerous or more transmissible than the other variants of coronavirus present currently. The World Health Organization has placed this new strain of the coronavirus, in a different category of variants under investigation due to the virus easily bypassing the RT-PCR tests.

This category roughly includes more than thousands of variants of the coronavirus that naturally occur, out of which only a small proportion poses any major health risks. As opposed to the variant of the concerned category which includes strains that were found in Brazil, the United Kingdom as well as South Africa.

Meanwhile, researchers are investigating why the new variant was more difficult to detect through the RT-PCR tests. Although it is common for viruses to mutate and form new strains. With the new variant being found, the French government is currently resisting calls for a renewed nationwide lockdown.
