Farmers in Dehradun’s Jhabrawala village are fed up of wild elephants destroying crops in their farms and have appealed to the Forest Department to do something about the issue. The pachyderms have been found to be arriving at the farms late in the night and stomping on the crops. Amidst the already crippling pandemic, this is another problem the farmers in Jhabrawala are facing.

The farmers who have asked the Forest Department for controlling the movements of these wild elephants have also demanded compensation for the losses suffered by them. One affected farmer named Pratap Bisht said, “A farmer’s only hope for taking care of his family is his farmland but when an entire year’s sugarcane crops are trampled by wild elephants in one go, it becomes extremely difficult for the farmer to handle his failing financial condition. We have hence informed the Forest Department about it and they have assured us about compensation. But we’ve heard that farmers have done this several times before and no one has ever gotten anything to date.”
