The world was hit by Covid-19 in early 2020 and most nations faced the brunt of it, including Japan. The country was in a state of emergency for several months in 2021 as well due to the increasing cases in Tokyo. The much-awaited Tokyo Olympics, which were touted to take place in 2020 had to be cancelled and the committee decided that it would take place in 2021. While the event will go according to plan, there is a huge threat of the Tokyo Olympics 2021 becoming a super-spreader event.

Only about 6% of the Japanese population has been vaccinated and the Olympics, many fear, might be the cause of harm for the Japanese people. Over 433,000 Japanese citizens signed a petition to cancel the games amid safety concerns. The event is set to be in a strict bio-bubble with 10,000 people who will be allowed to spectate the games.

A three-day quarantine rule has been put in place for athletes who will be arriving from 11 countries. The games will see a lot of involvement with big medical bodies from Japan and overseas who will be overseeing all the Covid-19 safety guidelines and procedures. Despite these guidelines, several surveys by local Japanese newspapers have been showing general disapproval from the public side regarding the games. According to one newspaper, 86% of the people think that the games could turn into a super-spreader event.

The Olympics planning committee thinks otherwise and they are all fired up to begin the games as they had to already postpone the games once in 2020, for the first time in history and are not ready for it to happen again. Bio-bubbles have been effective enough in several in many sports events especially in Cricket but it is yet to know just how effective it will be for the Olympics 2021.
