Sharad Pawar Calls For High-Profile Meeting Today Following Sachin Vaze Arrest
Meanwhile, amidst mounting attacks by the BJP, the Shiv Sena lashed out at the saffron party in its official mouthpiece Saamana, accusing the centre of insulting the Mumbai Police by sending the NIA for investigation in the Antilia car scare case
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has called for a meeting at 4 pm today with ministers of the Maharashtra government after the arrest of Mumbai police inspector Sachin Vaze on Saturday in connection to the Ambani car scare case. The move comes after the state administration was forced to transfer the matter to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following the mysterious death of businessman Mansukh Hiren, who was the original owner of the abandoned vehicle.
The cop has been sent to the central agency’s custody till 25 March. He was reportedly examined by a doctor in the NIA office during his interrogation yesterday after he complained of uneasiness. The NIA has also summoned two drivers of the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) along with another two personnel after evidence of the Scorpio vehicle being hidden in a Mumbai Police motor workshop emerged.
On the final day of the Vidhan Sabha budget session last Wednesday, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had announced that Vaze would be transferred from the CIU to the Citizen Facilitation Centre in view of the accusations by the opposition. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had openly criticized the Uddhav Thackeray administration and the Mumbai Police for delaying the detention of the cop, despite a statement from the widow of Hiren blaming the inspector for her husband’s death with supporting evidence.
Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena attacked the centre-ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through a scathing article in its mouthpiece Saamana. Writing that despite the state transferring the cop to another department and roping in the Anti-Terrorism Squad, the federal rule decided to send the NIA to probe the case. It further accused the centre of insulting the Mumbai Police by stepping in to the matter.
