NIA Arrests Mumbai Cop Sachin Vaze In Ambani Car Scare Case
Following an interrogation of over 13 hours by the NIA, the Assistant Police Inspector was arrested by the NIA under various charges in the Antilia car scare case and in connection with the mysterious murder of businessman Mansukh Hiren
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Assistant Police Inspector (API) Sachin Vaze on Saturday late night for planting a Scorpio with explosives outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence on 25 February. He was summoned in the morning on 13 March at around 11.30 am by the officials and taken into custody after being grilled for over 12 hours at around 11.50 pm.
A former Shiv Sena member, he has been sent to the central agency’s custody till 25 March under various charges, including forgery, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and under the Explosives Substances Act, 1908.
What looked like a case of mischief initially turned murkier with the mysterious death of businessman Mansukh Hiren, the alleged owner of the car. Hiren’s widow had given her statement through a letter that was read out by former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis last week in the budget session of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha. Vimal Hiren named and accused Vaze of intimidating her deceased spouse and forcing him to confess his involvement in the case. She had also claimed that the vehicle was in possession of the tainted cop for the last four months, including at the time of the incident.
The policeman was himself the first investigating officer in the high-profile case as a part of the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) till he was transferred to another department by the Uddhav Thackeray government last week amidst mounting attacks from the opposition. The case was then given to the Anti-Terrorism Squad but subsequently taken on by the NIA.
