With a career spanning over 45 years, the actor celebrates his 70th birthday today and the immense love from his fans continue to shower in.

The name Rajinikanth spread like a wildfire in the era of no social media and that was the power of his on-screen charm and presence. Rajini’s unique style made a special place in the hearts of the audience. However, the actor’s original name is Shivaji Rao Gaikwad, born and brought up in Bangalore. He grew up speaking Marathi and Kannada. Being a movie buff, Rajini joined the Madras film institute in the early 70s. After making his debut with a Kannada film, the actor got a big breakthrough in K Balchander’s Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal, and the rest is history.
Before getting his big break in the film industry, Rajinikanth used to work as a coolie, carpenter, and a bus conductor to earn a daily living. After joining the Madras film institute, the actor spent a lot of time learning the Tamil language with the accent and pure essence. And that dedication earned him many of his first projects and collaborations with director K Balchander.
It was not a cherry-picking job to get an important role in a film. And similarly, Rajinikanth took each step very carefully beginning with smaller roles. In the first two years of his career, the actor got only negative roles to essay; be it of an abusive husband, a rapist, a womanizer, an adulterer, etc, but it was in 1977 when he first got to portray a positive role in the film Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri.
Rajinikanth went on to act in many super hit films and it was his unique style and dedication that got him some of the finest roles ever. The superstar bagged eleven Tamil remakes of Amitabh Bachchan films like Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Laawaris, and Don among others. And that paved a way for the actor’s ‘All India Stardom’.
Thalaiva’s birthday is celebrated like a festival every year where you can see fans bathing the actor’s cutouts with milk, everything like a tradition. And not just that, Rajini’s fan clubs organize blood donation, eye donation camps and also distribute food for the poor which makes it more than just a festival.
