Did You Know Dharmendra Once Drunk-Dialed Hrishikesh Mukherjee For This Reason?

Read to know why superstar of the 80s Dharmendra had once drunk dialled director Hrishikesh Mukherjee and did not let him sleep the whole night.

Voted among the top 10 most handsome men in the world, Bollywood actor Dharmendra rose to fame in the mid-seventies. He worked in more than 200 films and has been associated with the Bollywood film industry for more than 6 decades and delivered hit films like  Sholay, Dharam-Veer, Phool Aur Patthar, Ankhen, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Jugnu and Hukumat.  Dharmendra always shares instances from his shooting days through social media or various interviews. When Dharmendra appeared on the popular talk show, The Kapil Sharma Show, he shared an instance where he drunk dialled director Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Dharmendra shared that he was travelling back from Banglore with renowned director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. On the way, the director told Dharmendra about the film Anand and also shared that he was planning to cast the latter for the film. A few days later, Dharmendra got to know that Hrishikesh had cast Rajesh Khanna for the film. Dharmendra was upset by this decision of the director since he was supposed to be a part of the film.

One night after getting drunk, Dharmendra called up Hrishikesh Mukherjee and did not let him sleep for the whole night. Dharmendra kept telling the director, “You were supposed to cast me in Anand, then why did you choose Rajesh Khanna.” The director kept asking Dharmendra to go back to sleep assuring that they will talk about the matter later. But Dharmendra was not in a mood to go back to sleep and kept calling him all night long.  Dharmendra and Hrishikesh Mukherjee were considered one of the best actor-director duos during the late 1960s and early 1970s. They worked together for several classic Hindi films like Chupke Chupke, Majhli Didi and Guddi.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film Anand starred Rajesh Khanna in the lead roles with actors Amitabh Bachchan, Sumita Sanyal, Ramesh Deo and Seema Deo in the supporting roles. The film was critically appreciated and also won several accolades.
