hadn\u2019t read the script. In the 29th minute, a Danilo turnover gifted possession to Kaish\u016b Sano, who beat Casemiro for pace, held his shape, and drilled a screamer into the bottom-left corner. Houston went quiet. Zion Suzuki had already made himself known to Brazil \u2014 he saved Vin\u00edcius Jr\u2019s shot in the 36th minute and then, in the 52nd, spread himself to deny Bruno Guimar\u00e3es\u2019 close-range header. Japan were holding. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zee5.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/2026\/0-6-4z5974253\/0-2-5z5974716\/teams\/brazil\/brazil-squad\">Brazil<\/a> were rattled.<\/p>\n<p>Then came Casemiro. His diving header from a Magalh\u00e3es cross in the 56th minute levelled it at 1\u20131, and four minutes later Vin\u00edcius Jr nearly won it with a stunning trivela that clipped the outside of the post and went behind. That miss could have haunted Brazil. But Gabriel Martinelli \u2014 introduced for Cunha in the 65th minute \u2014 was in the right place at the right time in the 90th+5 minute. Guimar\u00e3es intercepted a loose clearance, threaded it between two defenders, and Martinelli finished it off the right post and into the net. Brazil survive. Japan do not.<\/p>\n<p>Suzuki was Japan\u2019s best performer. Three crucial saves, two of them from point-blank range. He had nothing left to fault himself for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Germany_1%E2%80%931_Paraguay_%E2%80%94_Boston_Stadium_Paraguay_Win_4%E2%80%933_on_Penalties\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zee5.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/2026\/match-clips\/0-6-4z5974253\/ger-vs-par-quickfire-highlights-fifa-world-cup-2026\/0-1-6z5994753?utm_source=GoogleOneBox&amp;utm_medium=GoogleSearch&amp;utm_campaign=OneBox_quick_fire_highlight\"><b>Germany 1\u20131 Paraguay<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 Boston Stadium (Paraguay Win 4\u20133 on Penalties)<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This was the biggest upset of the day. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zee5.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/2026\/0-6-4z5974253\/0-2-5z5974716\/teams\/germany\/germany-squad\">Germany<\/a> were the favourites against a Paraguay side that had never scored a World Cup knockout goal. That changed in the 42nd minute. Almir\u00f3n\u2019s dummy bought the space, Galarza\u2019s cross found the far post, and Julio Enciso\u2019s header went in. Historic. A few thousand Paraguayan fans in the Boston Stadium lost their minds.<\/p>\n<p>Germany levelled through Kai Havertz in the 54th minute, heading in a Wirtz cross. And then extra time produced one of the tournament\u2019s great VAR moments. Thomas Tah nodded in what appeared to be a 101st-minute winner \u2014 only for VAR to rule it out because Benjamin Anton had impeded goalkeeper Orlando Gill in the build-up. Disallowed.<\/p>\n<p>Next came the tiebreakers. Gill dived to his right and saved Havertz\u2019s spot-kick in round one. That save changed the shootout entirely. Germany\u2019s Woltemade missed later in the sequence. Paraguay\u2019s Sanabria also missed. In sudden death, Tah stepped up again \u2014 and hit it over the crossbar. Canale converted. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zee5.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/2026\/0-6-4z5974253\/0-2-5z5974716\/teams\/paraguay\/paraguay-squad\">Paraguay<\/a> 4\u20133. Germany go home.<\/p>\n<p>Gill\u2019s save on Havertz was the moment. It started with Jasper Verbruggen making a double save in the 21st minute \u2014 first denying El Aynaoui\u2019s header, then blocking Hakimi\u2019s follow-up, all in the space of two seconds. Yassine Bounou answered in the 44th minute, tipping Van de Ven\u2019s thunderbolt over the crossbar. Two goalkeepers. Making clear they were the best players on the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute with a header and then held his hands to his stomach in a tribute to his unborn child \u2014 a moment that silenced the stadium before the Dutch end erupted. But Issa Diop wasn\u2019t done. Meeting a Talbi cross in the 90+1st minute, he headed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zee5.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/2026\/0-6-4z5974253\/0-2-5z5974716\/teams\/morocco\/morocco-squad\">Morocco<\/a> level. Deep breath. Extra time.<\/p>\n<p>Verbruggen\u2019s second defining moment came in the 101st minute. Rahimi was through on goal, one-on-one, and the Dutch keeper spread himself and blocked it. Should have been a goal. Was not. The shootout that followed was extraordinary \u2014 El Aynaoui hit the crossbar, Kluivert hit the post, Hakimi hit the post. The woodwork was busy. Then Bounou saved Summerville\u2019s penalty. Saibari \u2014 after a facial cut in the 118th minute \u2014 stepped up and converted the winner. Morocco 3\u20132. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zee5.com\/sports\/football\/fifa-world-cup\/2026\/0-6-4z5974253\/0-2-5z5974716\/teams\/netherlands\/netherlands-squad\">Netherlands<\/a> out.<\/p>\n<p>Two goalkeepers in this match \u2014 Verbruggen and Bounou \u2014 made as many decisive interventions as the outfield players. Both deserved to be on the winning side.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Day_in_Summary\"><\/span><b>The Day in Summary<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>June 30 delivered everything the Round of 32 promised. Paraguay\u2019s first-ever knockout goal, then their first-ever knockout win. Morocco\u2019s shootout triumph over one of the tournament\u2019s fancied sides. Brazil scraping through in the 90th+5 minute. And goalkeepers \u2014 Suzuki, Gill, Verbruggen, Bounou \u2014 reminding everyone that the biggest moments in football are not always scored.
