Semi-Final | Atlanta Stadium | 16 July | 12:30 AM IST
Team News
England — Rice fitness concern, Konsa steps to right-back: Declan Rice is expected to start — he was substituted at half-time of the Norway quarter-final with a stomach illness, and a lingering hamstring concern means Tuchel has been managing him carefully. Jarell Quansah’s two-match suspension from the Mexico red card covers this semi-final, so John Stones and Marc Guéhi are expected to partner at centre-back with Ezri Konsa at right-back.
Argentina — no injury concerns, formation intrigue: Scaloni has no fitness concerns. The selection debate centres on shape: reports suggest a possible switch to a back three, though that would be unusually drastic for a manager who prefers subtle adjustments. More likely, Argentina will tweak the midfield zone rather than the defence. Julián Alvarez, who rescued Argentina against Switzerland off the bench, is pushing to start alongside Messi.
Predicted Starting XI
England — 4-2-3-1
Jordan Pickford is expected in goal. Ezri Konsa at right-back, John Stones and Marc Guéhi as the predicted centre-back pairing, Nico O’Reilly at left-back. Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice are expected as the double pivot. Bukayo Saka from the right, Jude Bellingham as the number ten, Anthony Gordon from the left. Harry Kane is expected to lead the line.
Argentina — 4-3-3
Emiliano Martínez is expected in goal. Nahuel Molina at right-back, Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez as the predicted centre-back pairing, Nicolás Tagliafico at left-back. Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister in midfield. Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez are predicted to lead the attack together, if the expected XI holds.

The Match Preview
England and Argentina have met fourteen times but never in a World Cup semi-final. The fixture carries weight far beyond the football — the Hand of God in 1986, Beckham’s red card in 1998, the Falklands in the backdrop. None of that history settles anything. One team advances. That’s the only outcome that matters.
What makes this match compelling is that both teams have survived on character more than controlled dominance. Argentina were two goals down against Egypt. They went to extra time against Cape Verde and Switzerland. Every time they’ve been pushed to the edge, Argentina produced a moment that reshaped the situation. England beat Mexico 3-2 with ten men, then needed extra time to beat Norway. Tuchel’s side has been resolute rather than maintaining their dominance through — and that quality will be tested again here.
Messi against England — for the first time: Lionel Messi has played more than 200 international matches and scored 21 World Cup goals across six tournaments. He has never faced England. With eight goals in this tournament, Messi shares the Golden Boot lead with Mbappé. England’s defensive line will spend 90 minutes solving a problem that no international defence has fully contained when it’s mattered most.
Bellingham and Kane vs the Argentine midfield: Bellingham has netted twice against Mexico and Norway. The Argentine midfield will have to track Bellingham’s late-arriving runs from the ten position while simultaneously screening for Kane dropping to link. Kane has six goals in this tournament and has converted every penalty in this tournament. The one scenario Argentina want to avoid is a set-piece or foul near the box with Kane within range.
Argentina’s route to a goal runs through Messi in the half-space — the zone between midfield and England’s back four where he receives, turns, and plays. Rice and Anderson must be compact enough to deny him that pocket without leaving Mac Allister or Fernández free in deeper positions. Get the balance wrong once, and Argentina have the quality to make it definitive.
England hasn’t reached a World Cup final in 60 years. Argentina are attempting to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy. Both teams carry the weight of what they are trying to do. It should be tight, physical, and decided by one of the few individuals at this FIFA World Cup 2026™ capable of conjuring a moment from nothing.
