The Goal — Egypt Strike First
Egypt took the lead with a set-piece executed with precision. In the 15th minute, a short corner routine released Marwan Attia on the flank, who floated a perfect cross to the back post. Centre-back Yasser Ibrahim had timed his run and beaten Lisandro Martínez in the air, powering a header into the bottom right corner. Egypt 1–0.
For a side that arrived at this Round of 16 as significant underdogs, it was exactly the kind of goal they needed — simple in concept, brilliant in execution, and earned from set-piece work that Argentina had no answer for.
The Penalty — and the Save That Changed Everything
Argentina’s response was immediate. In the 19th minute, Enzo Fernández threaded a clever through ball to Tagliafico, who was clipped inside the penalty area by Ahmed Hassan. The referee pointed to the spot without hesitation.
Lionel Messi stepped up. The man who scored his 20th World Cup goal in the Round of 32 placed it low to the keeper’s left. Mostafa Shobeir went the right way, spread himself full length, and kept it out. Save. Penalty missed. Egypt’s lead held.
It was the second time in two knockout matches that Argentina had been denied from the spot. The momentum swing was enormous.
Shobeir — Egypt’s Wall
The penalty was not Shobeir’s only intervention. He followed it with a sharp close-range save from Mac Allister’s header in the 28th minute, and in the 39th minute, he produced perhaps his best stop of the half — diving to his left to turn around Julián Álvarez’s powerful first-time strike from Tagliafico’s cut-back.
Three saves, a penalty stop, and a clean sheet at half-time against Argentina. The Egyptian goalkeeper is the reason this score remains 1–0.
Argentina — Pressure Without Reward
Argentina have not been poor. Messi dropped deep early — a reverse pass to Tagliafico in the 3rd minute showed his intent — and the one-touch passing sequences through the middle in the 10th minute were sharp and purposeful. A free kick from 30 metres in the 31st minute hit the post, but there have been enough clear openings created to suggest Argentina’s quality will eventually tell.
The question at half-time is whether that quality will tell in time. Egypt’s defensive shape has been well-organised, compact, and disciplined. Shobeir has done the rest.
Half-Time: Egypt 1–0 Argentina
Egypt lead. Argentina have had the chances — a penalty, a close-range header, a first-time strike — and have none of them to show for it. The defending champions need a second-half response. Whether Shobeir can sustain this level for another 45 minutes is the question the second half will answer.
