FIFA World Cup 2026™ | Senegal 1–0 Belgium | Half-Time Report

Belgium vs Senegal | Match Preview
FIFA World Cup 2026

Senegal go into the break leading Belgium 1–0, and if anything, that scoreline flatters the Europeans. The Lions of Teranga have been the better team across a first half of missed chances, a freak post, a pitch invasion, and one moment of predatory finishing that may prove decisive. Seattle is witnessing something special.

13′ — Sarr’s Howler at the Near Post

The miss that will be replayed for years arrived in the 13th minute. Ismail Jakobs flew down the left and drove a dangerous cross into the six-yard box. Thibaut Courtois, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, failed to claim it cleanly — palming it weakly down into the path of Ismaïla Sarr. Sarr’s first poke struck the post. The rebound sat up for him. Open goal. Off-balance, he squirmed it wide.

At 0–0, it could have been 2–0. It is the kind of miss that can haunt a game. Sarr will be relieved that the goal came before the half ended.

18′ — Chances at Both Ends

Senegal were not done creating. Iliman Ndiaye sparked a sweeping move down the right flank, setting up Idrissa Gueye for a crisp half-volley from the edge of the area. Courtois saved it comfortably. Belgium responded immediately — Kevin De Bruyne tried his luck from range and blasted well over the bar. Both sides are probingsides probing. Neither finding the net. Yet.

25′ — Diarra Punishes the Rebound

Sadio Mané isolated his marker on the flank and delivered a perfectly weighted cross toward the penalty spot. Sarr met it with a powerful header that came back off the post. This time, Habib Diarra reacted first — slamming the rebound into the unguarded net before the scrambling Belgian defence could recover. 1–0 Senegal.

It was classic second-chance football. Sarr’s header was good enough to beat any goalkeeper. The post gave Belgium a lifeline. Diarra took it away.

30′ — A Stranger Interruption

Three pitch invaders made it onto the field shortly after the hydration break, evading security before being tackled and removed by stadium staff. Play was briefly halted. It was the kind of moment that disrupts rhythm and momentum — which, at 0–1, was not what Belgium needed.

43’–45+1′ — Belgium Push, Diaw Holds Firm

Belgium’s response came too late and was insufficient. Leandro Trossard found space at the top of the box and struck a clean, powerful effort — Senegal goalkeeper Mory Diaw read it well and made a comfortable low save. Then, deep into five minutes of added time, Maxim De Cuyper worked a short corner routine and curled a brilliant 25-yard effort toward the top corner. Diaw threw himself to his right and tipped it around the post. Outstanding goalkeeping. Senegal go in at the break with their lead intact.

What the Second Half Holds

Belgium will need De Bruyne to find his best form — and quickly. He has been present but not decisive, which, for a player of his quality, is not enough in a knockout match. Thomas Meunier and Trossard have created pockets of space on the right side that Belgium have not yet fully exploited.

Senegal, for their part, hashave the blueprint. Hold the defensive shape, hit Belgium on the counter through Mané and Ndiaye, and make them pay for the high line. One more goal and this match is almost certainly over.

Belgium hashave too much quality to go quietly. But they will need to be far better in the second half than they have been in the first.
