Group L | BMO Field, Toronto | June 24, 2026 | 4:30 AM IST
Match Overview
Both Croatia and Panama lost their opening Group L fixture and arrive in Toronto knowing that a second defeat would end their World Cup campaigns. Croatia were beaten 4–2 by England — a result that leaves Luka Modrić’s record fifth World Cup under serious pressure. Panama fell 1–0 to Ghana in a chaotic, fractious contest at this same ground, Caleb Yirenkyi’s late winner doing the damage in the 95th minute. There is no margin left for error for either side.

Croatia — Team Analysis
Zlatko Dalić’s 4–3–3 is built around Luka Modrić — one of the great midfield orchestrators in the history of the game. When Modrić controls the tempo, Croatia control everything else. They proved it in 2018 by reaching the final and in 2022 by finishing third. Against England, something wasn’t right: they were level at 2–2 at half-time through goals from Baturina and Musa, but the second half belonged entirely to England. Croatia were outrun and outscored. Dalić needs a response — and Joško Gvardiol, recently back from injury, needs a cleaner performance at the back.
Key player: Luka Modrić — At 40, making his fifth World Cup appearance, the veteran midfielder remains one of the finest players of his generation. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 — the year he carried Croatia all the way to the final against France. This is almost certainly his last World Cup, and Dalić needs the version of Modrić that wins finals, not the one that was swamped in the second half against England.
Panama — Team Analysis
Thomas Christiansen’s Panama qualified through CONCACAF without losing a match — a remarkable achievement for a nation making only its second World Cup appearance. The 4–2–3–1 relies on physicality, organised defending, and Edgar Yoel Barcenas to drive through the midfield and connect play. Against Ghana, they fell to a 95th-minute goal in a chaotic, fractious contest at this same ground. Aníbal Godoy, 36 and in his 159th international, captains a squad that is short on star power but long on organisation and fighting spirit.
Key player: Edgar Yoel Barcenas — the creative burden in midfield falls on Barcenas with Carrasquilla absent. He’s the player Panama need to drive forward, connect defence to attack, and find space against Croatia’s deeper block. If Barcenas can match his qualifying form, Panama still have a chance. If he’s kept quiet, Christiansen’s options narrow considerably.
Head-to-Head
Croatia and Panama have no World Cup history between them — Panama’s only previous appearance was 2018. They’ve met in occasional friendlies, nothing competitive. Context matters more than history here: Croatia reached the 2018 final and finished third in 2022, producing some of the great tournament moments of this era. Panama are in only their second World Cup. The gap in pedigree is vast — but Croatia needs results, not reputation, right now.
Tactical Preview
Croatia will try to establish midfield control through Modrić and Kovačić, build possession patiently, and look for space in behind Panama’s defensive line as it compresses. Panama will defend in their 4–2–3–1 block, press when they can, and look to create from set pieces and physical duels — areas where they frustrated Ghana for long stretches. The central midfield battle is key: if Carrasquilla can disrupt Croatia’s rhythm, Panama have a chance. If Modrić gets time and space, Croatia’s quality should tell.
Key Storylines
- Adalberto Carrasquilla, Panama’s 2024 CONCACAF Player of the Year and the creative heartbeat of Christiansen’s midfield, is carrying an injury ahead of this fixture — and whether he takes the field against Croatia remains unclear. His absence would be a serious blow. Carrasquilla is the player who receives between the lines, unlocks tight defences, and sets the attacking tempo for everything Panama do going forward. A Panama without him is a different, and lesser, proposition.
- Panama’s only previous World Cup was Russia 2018, where they lost all three group games without winning a point. Christiansen has built something more cohesive over four years of unbeaten qualifying — but this is the moment when Panama need to prove that what happened in qualifying translates to the actual tournament stage.
- Croatia’s World Cup history has a recurring theme: falling behind and finding a way through. In 2018, they recovered from trailing England in the semi-final to win 2–1 in extra time. Dalić’s teams perform when the pressure is at its highest. Panama will need to make sure any lead they earn is enough to hold.
Our Prediction
Croatia are the more experienced and technically superior side, but they looked vulnerable against England and Modrić is running out of tournaments. Panama are organised and dangerous from set pieces — and they know how to make life difficult. Croatia should win this: their quality in high-pressure matches is proven at the very highest level. But Panama’s physicality and Carrasquilla’s energy will make Dalić’s side earn every moment of it.
