After it was discovered that Microsoft was improperly collecting and keeping the data of children who registered to use its Xbox video game platform, the company opted to pay $20 million to achieve a settlement. On Monday, the Federal Trade Commission and the tech company struck a deal in which it was requested that underage gamers’ privacy be strengthened. But before it can take effect, a federal court must approve the settlement. The federal authorities discovered that Microsoft had illegally retained the data for longer periods of time than necessary for accounts created before 2021, as well as that it had collected the data without alerting parents or getting their consent.

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act was broken by these actions, according to the FTC. The law requires that all kid-targeted internet services and websites acquire parental permission and notify the parent when personal information about their child is being gathered. Microsoft kept account setup data from 2015 to 2020, sometimes for years even when a parent didn’t finish the procedure, according to a statement from the FTC.

Microsoft is now trying to enhance its age verification processes and make sure that parents are involved in the establishment of kid accounts

Dave McCarthy, corporate vice president for Xbox at Microsoft, detailed further measures the company is now taking to enhance its age verification processes and make sure that parents are involved in the establishment of kid accounts for the service in a blog post.

“Regrettably, we did not meet customer expectations and are committed to complying with the order to continue improving upon our safety measures,” Microsoft’s Dave McCarthy, CVP of Xbox Player Services, wrote in an Xbox blog post. “We believe that we can and should do more, and we’ll remain steadfast in our commitment to safety, privacy, and security for our community.”

It added that the majority of these focus on initiatives to enhance age verification technologies and to inform kids and parents about privacy concerns. The response comes in response to the federal agency’s warning to Amazon last week, which claimed that its Echo devices were gathering customers’ personal information without their knowledge. After the FTC discovered that Amazon had kept sensitive data, including child voice recordings, for years, it agreed to pay $25 million. Ring, an Amazon doorbell camera product, also agreed to pay $5.8 million after giving staff members unrestricted access to consumer information.

Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, has resigned from the social media company, according to Reuters. Irwin joined Twitter in June 2022 and took the lead of the trust and safety team in November after Yoel Roth stepped down. Irwin was in charge of content moderation. Following billionaire Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October of last year, the social media network has come under fire for insufficient protection against hazardous content. The site is having difficulty retaining advertising because companies are apprehensive about displaying next to inappropriate content. In the midst of all of this, Irwin resigned.

Musk appointed Linda Yaccarino, former NBC Universal advertising executive, as Twitter’s new CEO earlier this month. According to Reuters, an email request for comment on Irwin’s departure received an auto-response with a shit emoji. Irwin’s internal Slack account looked to be deactivated, according to Fortune.

Soon after taking over Twitter, Musk reduced costs, and the company lay off thousands of people. Many of those fired had worked on measures to block unlawful and damaging content, as well as to defend election integrity and ensure accurate information was displayed on the site. Musk has advocated Community Notes, a tool that allows users to contribute context to tweets, as a way to combat false information on Twitter.

Musk is in hot water even away from Twitter

Musk is in hot water even away from Twitter. In a proposed class action, investors accused Tesla CEO of insider trading. Musk is accused of manipulating the cryptocurrency dogecoin, causing investors to lose billions of dollars. The filing was submitted in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday night. Investors claim Musk utilized Twitter posts, paid internet influencers, his 2021 appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and other “publicity stunts” to financially trade at their cost through numerous Dogecoin wallets controlled by him or Tesla.

According to the lawsuit, Musk used a “deliberate course of carnival barking, market manipulation, and insider trading” to deceive investors and promote himself and his companies. In addition to Twitter, Musk also runs SpaceX, a rocket and spacecraft manufacturer, as well as Tesla, which makes electric cars.

On Thursday, Reuters reported that Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Musk and Tesla, declined to comment. According to reports, the lawyers for the investors did not react quickly to demands for comment. Investors have accused Musk, the world’s second-richest person, of purposefully pushing up the price of Dogecoin by more than 36,000% over two years and then allowing it to plummet. In a case that began in June, they added their most recent allegations in a proposed third amended complaint.

IBM CEO recently revealed the company is pausing hiring for certain job roles which can be performed by chatbots. Read to know more about the AI jobs and what it means.

IBM to replace humans with AI for some jobs

In a recent interview, Arvind Krishna the Chief Executive Officer of International Business Machines (IBM) Corp. stated the company may soon pause hiring for roles that can be substituted with AI. He suggested that hiring in human resources may be slowed or paused. As per Krishna, mundane HR tasks such as offering employment verification letters and moving employees from one department to another, etc can be fully automated.

“I could easily see 30 percent of that getting replaced by AI and automation over five years,” stated Krishna. As per the CEO’s estimates, IBM may sack about 7,800 employees. James Kavanaugh, the Chief Financial Officer of the firm earlier revealed new efficiency and productivity steps will help IBM drive about $2 billion in savings by 2024. However, the decision of replacing employees with AI was announced a few months after letting go of 3,900 workers. It is one of the largest industrial research organizations in the world with almost 260,000 workers.

More on the emergence of AI bots and beyond

The fear of AI taking over human jobs and lives has been rampant with the development of ChatGPT and others going viral. Within a few months of its debut, the ObenAI-developed chatbot made headlines and shocked the world. The field has forced several firms and rethink and adapt to the technology’s uncharted territories. However, it comes with the collateral damage of humans becoming jobless.

As per a recent Goldman Sachs report, AI jobs may soon become the norm. It revealed that they could potentially replace about 300 million full-time jobs in the coming days. It added that the “generative Ai’s” ability to replace these jobs. As per the report, ‘Generative AI’s’ ability to create 3D models, videos, text, and audio is unnoticeable from human work is “a major advancement,” and would have an impact on jobs everywhere.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, has captured our attention with its capabilities. However, as wonderful as it is, data privacy has always been a source of contention for the chatbot’s detractors. The corporation has now chosen to tighten the privacy settings on ChatGPT. From now on, users will be in charge of how OpenAI handles data. Let’s have a look at how we can accomplish this.

The age of advanced AI models has arrived. There is no turning back now. Human-like artificial intelligence systems are our present and future. Their human-like talents come at a price: the massive volumes of data used to train them. Users and governments all over the world are becoming increasingly concerned about potential privacy infringement by firms and their AI-powered products.

Chats will not be able to be used as training data by OpenAI

The new ChatGPT privacy feature allows users to disable their chat records. This prevents OpenAI from using your inputs for training. You can disable history by visiting ChatGPT’s ‘Settings.’ ‘Chat History & Training’ is a new option in ‘Settings.’ If you turn off the option, you will no longer see your recent chats in the sidebar.

The chat will be saved for 30 days by the firm

In addition to the ability to disable chat history, you can opt out of having your content used for training ChatGPT. However, there is a catch to the new functionality. Even if you turn off history and training, OpenAI will keep your conversations for 30 days. The corporation claims it will merely check them to detect abuse.

Personal information from the internet is used to train AI models

Companies such as OpenAI train their AI models by scraping millions of web pages, Reddit posts, books, social networking sites, and other sources. Data from platforms like Reddit and Twitter are required to build the conversational-style generated text engine. The difficulty is that the scraped data will almost certainly contain some personal information.

Italy requested that OpenAI provide users with data control

In Italy, OpenAI was recently banned for illegally processing user data. From that perspective, ChatGPT’s new feature is intriguing. The Italian data protection authorities have published a list of requirements that the corporation must follow in order to operate in Italy. Giving users control over their data is one of them. It appears that OpenAI does not want similar problems in other countries.

On Tuesday, Alibaba demonstrated its response to the ChatGPT frenzy, displaying new software that it wants to eventually roll out across all of its platforms.

Tongyi Qianwen, a huge language model revealed by the Chinese internet giant, will be included in its Tmall Genie smart speakers and workplace chat platform DingTalk. It was trained on massive amounts of data to provide compelling responses to user prompts.

According to the company, the technology will first be integrated into those two products before being applied to all Alibaba (BABA) platforms, ranging from e-commerce to mapping services.

Group CEO Daniel Zhang, who also runs Alibaba’s cloud division, unveiled the new AI-powered service at a conference in Beijing, demonstrating how it can help users transcribe meeting notes, construct business pitches, and read children’s stories.

Tongyi Qianwen, which roughly translates as “finding truth by asking a thousand questions,” has been made available to enterprise customers for testing before being made available to additional users.

“We are at a technological watershed moment, driven by generative AI and cloud computing,” Zhang said.

The technology that powers platforms like ChatGPT is known as generative AI. The service has risen in popularity in recent months, and Chinese IT companies have been racing to build their own versions, prompting some critics to fear that the trend would exacerbate an already heated rivalry between the US and China in emerging technology.

Alibaba’s customized models

Alibaba, which has a big cloud computing business, said in a statement that clients of that division will be able to use the new technology to develop their own bespoke huge language models.

The debut follows Baidu’s (BIDU) launch of its own ChatGPT-style service last month. Baidu (BIDU) demonstrated how their chatbot, ERNIE, could write a company newsletter, come up with a corporate motto, and solve a math conundrum during a similar presentation.

SenseTime, one of China’s most notable AI firms, released a range of new services on Monday, including a chatbot named SenseChat.

China will establish regulations to oversee the functioning of such services. The country’s cyberspace authority said in draft rules released Tuesday to elicit public opinion that generative AI services would be forced to undergo security checks before they could operate.

Users’ true identities will also have to be verified by service providers. They must also share information on the scale and type of data they employ, as well as basic algorithms and other technical details. Following the event, Alibaba’s Hong Kong stock rose 1.6%.

Last month, the corporation revealed its intention to divide its operations into six sections. The majority of those units, including its cloud services company, which handles AI initiatives, will be allowed to raise cash and go public.

Musk conducted a poll on the social media site asking users if they thought he should resign as CEO of Twitter

“I think I need to stabilize the organization and just make sure it’s in a financially healthy place and that the product roadmap is clearly laid out,” said Musk, speaking virtually at the World Government Summit in Dubai, when asked if he had identified a new Twitter CEO and when that person would be hired. “I don’t know, I’m guessing probably towards the end of this year would be good timing to find someone else to run the company, because I think it should be in a stable position around, you know, at the end of this year,” he said.

On Dec. 21, Musk said on Twitter that he would resign as its chief executive “as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job!” He added that he would “just run the software & servers teams”. Days earlier, Musk conducted a poll on the social media site asking users if they thought he should resign as CEO of Twitter. The majority of respondents responded yes.

Elon Musk announced Twitter will soon start sharing ad revenue with creators having Blue subscriptions. Read to know more details about Musk’s new initiative.

Twitter ad revenue to blue subscription creators

According to Elon Musk’s new announcement, Twitter will begin an ad revenue-sharing program with creators on the platform. However, it is only sharing revenue from the reply-threads ads and with creators who subscribed to Twitter’s Blue verification program. As per the announcement, it will start today but, very few details are available about its mechanism. However, so far there is only one tweet by Musk explaining it.

Twitter’s new program is aimed at helping it compete with other social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. They have a system dedicated to paying creators using ad splits of funds. For a while, Musk has been talking to creators about a revenue-sharing system. Previously Twitter introduced the option for creators to monetize their accounts using the Super Follow and Tips feature

More on the new program

Twitter’s new revenue sharing for creators with blue subscriptions comes after YouTube introduced its Partner Program. YouTube is introducing a new method of ad-revenue sharing with content creators on the video platform. Unlike YouTube, Twitter does not have specific requirements needed for earning ad revenue. Additionally, it is unclear how many tweets need to be viral before gaining benefits from the program. Very little is known about it apart from the fact that creators need to have a blue subscription.

However, creators with legacy blue verified accounts will not be gaining from ad revenue. The platform may soon remove legacy verification ticks and make subscribing vital for the verification. The pricing varies with location and is currently $8 per month for Twitter web users. However, people using mobile apps have to pay $11 every month. The subscription offers several benefits such as editing tweets, undoing, grouping, and organizing them. Additionally, it also offers a navigation bar, themes, icons, and a reader feature. Subscribers can also share full HD videos up to 2 GB.

According to people familiar with the plans, Spotify Technology SA is considering layoffs as soon as this week, joining a wave of tech companies, from Amazon.com Inc. to Meta Platforms Inc., in announcing job cuts to slash expenses.

The folks did not specify the number of posts to be abolished. In October, Spotify fired off 38 employees from its Gimlet Media and Parcast podcast studios. According to its third-quarter financial report, the music-streaming behemoth employs approximately 9.800 people.

During the pandemic, tech companies increased their workforce but were compelled to cut back due to decreased advertising revenue and a bleak economic outlook.

Amazon.com, Meta, and Microsoft Corp. were among the most recent corporations to announce layoffs, while Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, announced on Friday that it will lose roughly 12,000 positions or more than 6% of its global workforce.

A Spotify representative declined to comment on the impending cuts.

Beginning in 2019, the corporation made a significant investment in podcasting. It spent more than a billion dollars purchasing podcast networks, creation tools, a hosting service, and the rights to popular shows such as The Joe Rogan Experience and Armchair Expert.

Nonetheless, the investments have put investors’ patience to the test. Last year, shares fell 66% as investors questioned when they would start generating returns. Spotify executives stated in June that the company’s podcast business would be profitable within the next one to two years.

According to the source, Spotify layoffs will affect editorial employees in September 2022. According to the company’s Q3 statistics, the company currently employs approximately 9,800 people.

Thousands of employees worldwide have been affected by the season of mass layoffs. According to Layoffs. FYI, a total of 173 IT companies fired 55,970 employees in 2023 at the time of writing this piece.

Los Angeles & New York City & Phoenix — ReadyReturns ecommerce returns automation software is helping retailers catch up on their backlog of New Year’s returns by introducing automation to the process to ease the crunch. According to reports by Business Insider, one in four Americans plans to send back a product they ordered online after the holidays. Last year, UPS reported processing more than 60 million returns in January, with expectations for this year’s haul to represent a 10 percent increase.

“Ecommerce sales have ballooned in recent years as more consumers turn to the internet for their shopping. This also means that returns are increasing across the board, too. If retailers don’t have an efficient system in place to handle this, it can make for a chaotic January,” comments Michael Lazar, an Executive at ReadyCloud, the makers of ReadyReturns.

ReadyReturns is designed to increase efficiency and accuracy in the return process while simultaneously working as a must-have customer service tool. Retailers are in full control of their return policy with ReadyReturns, with the ability to set custom rules for each return including things like return-by dates and return shipping fees. ReadyReturns also features options for QR code UPS return shipping labels for mobile returns, and also offers front-door pickup on returns (in participating regions).

“Around 30 percent of all orders purchased online ultimately are sent back to retailers. Factor in the holiday rush orders, and without the right system in place, you could see a surge of returns that pile up quickly,” Lazar says. “The good news is that ReadyReturns can be set up and implemented quickly to bring efficiency to the process and to your entire team.
