Ranchi Mar 28 PTI A special CBI court in Jharkhand sentenced Mandar MLA Bandhu Tirkey a former minister in the state government to three years in jail in a corruption case on MondayThe court of Special Judicial Commissioner and CBI Prabhat Kumar Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on TirkeyTirkey a three-term MLA who is the working president of state Congress is set to lose his membership of the assembly with the convictionThe CBI had filed the case against Tirkey in 2010 for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income during his first stint as MLA between 2005 and 2009 Tirkey had served as the Education Minister in the then Madhu Koda government of the CongressTirkeys counsel S Agrawal said that he will move higher court against the convictionHe has been granted bail as his sentence is three years Agrawal said referring to CrPC Section 389As per Section 389 3 of CrPC a trial court can grant bail to a convicted accused enabling him to appeal at a higher court given that he is sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three yearsIn 2013 CBI had filed a charge sheet against Tirkey but urged the court to close the case as the value of the disproportionate assets unearthed was low -- Rs 628 lakhThe court rejected the agencys stand and took cognisance of the offence starting the trialHe was arrested on December 12 2018 in the case and was released after a few months Tirkey fought the 2019 state elections as a candidate of Babulal Marandi-led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha P but joined Congress along with Poraiyahat MLA Pradeep Yadav after a split in the party following its merger with BJPTirkey along with Yadav and Marandi are facing proceedings under the anti-defection law PTI SAN NAM SOM SOM

Ranchi Mar 27 PTI The bodies of two persons who had gone missing in Thursdays cargo vessel mishap in Jharkhands Sahibganj have been recovered officials saidThe administration is suspecting that three more people might be missing according to claims made by family members of those who were yet to return home after the incidentThree trucks have been located that fell into the river during the mishap the officials saidAt least three persons were reported missing as six trucks on board a cargo vessel which was on its way to Katihar in Bihar fell into the Ganga in Sahibganj on March 24 officials had saidTwo teams of National Disaster Response Force NDRF comprising at least 22 members in each team have been carrying out rescue operations in the GangaNDRF assistant commandant Vinay Kumar who is leading the teams told PTI We fished out two bodies on Saturday We also carried out the rescue operation since Sunday morning but could not trace any other body Our main focus on Sunday was to pull out the trucks that have been located in the river However the vehicles could not be pulled out due to some technical problem with the crane The operation will again be carried out on Monday Kumar saidMeanwhile the special committee that has been set up to probe into the incident and alleged illegal transportation of stone chips from Jharkhand has started its investigation from Saturday an official saidMembers of the opposition BJP on Friday had created a ruckus in the Jharkhand Assembly over the cargo vessel mishap and had demanded a CBI probe into the incident alleging that it occurred during illegal transportation of stone chips to BiharBJPs legislative party leader and former chief minister Babulal Marandi on Sunday again demanded a CBI probe into the mishap and suspension of Sahibganj deputy commissionerTalking to media persons Marandi alleged The mishap was a result of corruption and loot by the current government The mineral wealth of the state is being looted under governments patronage Alleging that efforts are being made to keep the incident under wraps Marandi said a CBI inquiry should be ordered and the Sahibganj DC should be suspended PTI SAN NAM MM MM
