Kochi Jan 20 PTI The Crime Branch wing of the Kerala police on Thursday filed a statement in the Kerala High Court opposing the anticipatory bail plea filed by actor Dileep in a case registered against him and five others for allegedly threatening investigation officers probing the sexual assault of an actress back in 2017In its statement the Crime Branch said it is the first time in the history of Kerala that a person accused of a serious offence hatched a criminal conspiracy to harm the life of investigating officersHaving regards to the facts and circumstances of the case and considering the involvement of the petitioners in serious offence and that too to harm the life of the law enforcing officers of the State the petitioners are not entitled to invoke such extraordinary discretionary remedy of pre-arrest bail the Crime Branch said in the statementBesides Dileep his younger brother P Sivakumar and brother-in-law T N Suraj have also moved the high court seeking the same reliefThe Crime Branch said the allegations against Dileep and other petitioners are very serious and said custodial interrogation of the accused is required to unearth the criminal conspiracy hatched by themThe Crime Branch had recently registered the case on a complaint filed by an investigating officer based on a purported audio clip of Dileep which was released by a TV channel in which the actor was allegedly heard conspiring to attack the officialThe actor and five others were booked under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code including Sections 116 abetment 118 concealing design to commit offense 120B criminal conspiracy 506 criminal intimidation and 34 criminal act done by several peopleThe joint plea moved by all three has claimed that the complaint lodged against them by the officer DySP Crime Branch Baiju Paulose was falseThey have contended that the allegations in the FIR registered on the base of the complaint are wholly false and baselessThe actor and his relatives have alleged in the petition filed through advocate Philip T Varghese that the intention behind registration of the case was to take them into custody and humiliate them before the publicThis apprehension is borne out of the past conduct of the complainant officer who right from the start has been trying to falsely implicate the actor in the sexual assault case the petition has allegedThe victim an actress who has worked in Tamil Telugu and Malayalam films was abducted and allegedly molested inside her car for two hours by some of the accused who had forced their way into the vehicle on the night of February 17 2017 and later escaped in a busy area The entire act was filmed by some of the accused to blackmail the actressThere are 10 accused in the case and initially police arrested seven people Dileep was arrested subsequently and released on bail later PTI COR TGB ROH ROH

Kochi Jan 19 PTI The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau VACB to carry out a preliminary inquiry into allegations involved in the case of some police officers who travelled to Delhi at the expense of the parents of two girls for tracing their daughters Justice Devan Ramachandran gave the directive considering the suggestion made by the Amicus Curiae appointed by the court in ascertaining whether prosecution can be initiated against the officers one of whom had allegedly also demanded Rs 5 lakh from the parents to hand over custody of their daughters who were rescued from the national capital the VACB will cause a necessary preliminary enquiry into the various allegations involved in this case - but not merely confined to the demand of bribe alone - and file a comprehensive report before this Court in a sealed cover for further orders the order said and adjourned the case to February 11 It further said if after such an inquiry the VACB is convinced that further action is required it would not stop them from initiating such notwithstanding the fact that the Court has not seen their report until February 11 Justice Ramachandran said the resolve of the Court is to make the police an honest civilized modern and accountable force It is only if the indiscretions of a few individuals in the force are taken note of and stringent action completed will it serve as an example to others leading to the force being a truly worthy one the judge said As long as the police officers even obliquely obtain the impression that they will be supported in spite of their misdemeanors the eventual requirements of a strong policing and honest law enforcement would remain a chimera it observed Earlier the court had perused a report filed by the Commissioner of Police Kochi who had stated that the officers did not avail of the Railway travel warrants or advance travelling allowance that they were entitled to Instead they travelled by air at the expense of the parents the report had said and added that the Assistant Sub Inspector in the team also took Rs 17000 from the elder girl towards his and others boarding and lodging expenses The report had also said that the amounts taken from the family would be returned or reimbursed PTI COR TGB BN BN
New Delhi Jan 18 PTI The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on Tuesday said 11cities including Bengaluru Gurugram and Aurangabad have been selected as the winners of the Streets for People Challenge for their pilot projects to make roads more pedestrian-friendly In a statement the ministry said that under the challenge 38 cites had piloted re-imaginations of an important street each by prioritising them for pedestrians Eleven cities have been selected by a jury panel for the next phase of scale-up and will be awarded Rs 50 lakh each by the ministry the statement stated Kochi Kohima Nagpur Pimpri Chinchwad Pune Udaipur Ujjain and Vijayawada are the remaining eight cities While Bengaluru has been selected for creating public spaces in residential area with involvement of resident welfare association the project of Gurugram has been selected for pedestrianising markets and school zones by involving citizens The ministry also announced 10 winners of the pilot stage of the Nurturing Neighbourhoods Challenge that is aimed at shaping early childhood-friendly neighbourhoods in Indian cities According to the statement the challenge was also started in November 2020 and included 70 pilot projects by 25 cities Under the challenge Bengaluru has been selected for enhancing the safety of an anganwadi to foster independence in toddlers refurbishing common areas toilets and play spaces with child-specific design standards it stated Indore has been selected for its pilot project to provide a neighbourhood park previously inaccessible to young children and revamping it with lighting plants and recycled and natural materials The remaining eight city winners are Hubballi-Dharwad Jabalpur Kakinanda Kochi Rourkela Kohima Vadodara and Warangal PTI BUN SMN SMN
