Noida Apr 20 PTI A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a court in Uttar Pradeshs Gautam Buddh Nagar for raping a minor girl officials said on Wednesday The convict has also been slapped with a penalty of Rs 1 lakh by the court which ordered an increased one year imprisonment to him if he failed to pay the penalty amount the officials said According to a police spokesperson The incident had taken place in 2017 when the victim was five years old and the case was being heard by the Additional District Judges court in Surajpur which announced its verdict on Tuesday Due to the effective arguments by the prosecution the court awarded a 10 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh fine to the accused If he does not pay the fine amount he would be kept in jail for one more year the official said citing the order The accused who lived in Phase 3 area here and is a native of Etah district was charged with rape He was also booked under the stringent POCSO Act the official said The spokesperson said intensive action is being taken by the Gautam Budhh Nagar Police with the aim of protecting women and curbing crimes against women and children PTI KIS RDK

New Delhi Mar 23 PTI The Supreme Court Wednesday directed the central empowered committee CEC to examine and submit its report in a matter in which the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited RVNL has sought permission to cut 5094 trees for a railway line project between Mathura and Jhansi in the Taj Trapezium Zone TTZTTZ is about 10400 sq km spread over the districts of Agra Firozabad Mathura Hathras and Etah in Uttar Pradesh and Bharatpur district of RajasthanSolicitor General Tushar Mehta representing the RVNL told a bench of Justices L N Rao and B R Gavai that the present railway track between Delhi-Mathura and Jhansi is choked and even after the best efforts trains are delayed due to non-availability of free tracksMehta referred to the January 29 last year order passed by the apex court which had permitted cutting of 4102 trees for laying the third railway track between Mathura Junction and JhansiLet the CEC submit a report the bench observedAs further permission is sought for cutting of yet another 5094 trees which is required for the railway line CEC is directed to examine the matter and submit a report the bench saidIt directed the CEC to submit the report within four weeks in view of the importance of the projectThe bench said the matter would be listed thereafterThe top court was hearing an application filed by the RVNL seeking permission to fell 5094 trees for the railway line projectThe bench also dealt with several other applications filed in the TTZ matterIn its January 29 last year order the apex court had permitted felling of 4102 trees for the railway line project subject to conditions which were suggested by the CEC including that the felling of trees on the right of way identified for the project shall be limited to the bare minimum number and which is absolutely unavoidableThe top court is hearing the matter related to protection and preservation of the iconic Taj Mahal at Agra and its surroundingsThe apex court has been monitoring developments in the area to protect the monument built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631 The mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site PTI ABA SA
